Abortion Following the Immigration of an Adult Male Baboon ( Papio cynocephalus )

چکیده

Three abortions and the death of a vigorous infant occurred in a baboon (Papw cynocephalusj group in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, within the two weeks following the immigration of an aggressive adult male. The immigrant male attained top-ranking dominance status in the group prior to these events. Circumstantial observations suggest that the reproductive losses were related to persistent intense aggression from the immigrant adult male. In the past ten years, only three other miscarriages have occurred in Amboseli. Inducement of abortion is discussed as a reproductive tactic that may be available to males of mammalian species whose life histories favor the evolution of infant-killing by males.

Behavioral, endocrine, and immunological correlates of immigration by an aggressive male into a natural primate group.

A very aggressive young adult male entered one of three long-term study groups of yellow baboons. Papio cynocephalus, approximately 3 weeks after an immobilization project began. The immigrant male's rate of agonistic encounters was appreciably higher than average, and these interactions disproportionately involved adult females as targets. Basal cortisol concentrations were higher and total ly...

Knuckle walking by a baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

This paper describes the development of a knuckle walking mode of locomotion by a free-living yellow baboon (Papio cynocephalus). Some implications of this occurrence for theories of the evolution of knuckle walking are discussed.

“Friendship” with Males: A Female Counterstrategy to Infanticide in Chacma Baboons of the Okavango Delta

___–1 ___ 0 ___ +1 The fundamental conflict of reproductive interests between males and females, originally articulated by Trivers (1972) and Parker (1979), may have diverse evolutionary consequences at multiple levels: genetic, morphological, physiological , social, ecological, life historical (Arnqvist and Rowe 2005; Chapman 2006). This volume addresses one dramatic manifestation of this conf...

Sequences homologous to BAV component of HL23V in baboon tissues.

The BAV component of HL23V virus (HL23V-BAB) hybridized to DNA from different Baboon tissues and appears to be an endogenous Baboon virus. Competition hybridization studies show that HL23V-BAB is closely related to viruses isolated from various Baboon species: P. hamadrys, P. papio, and P. cynocephalus. Competition hybridization studies also show that normal Baboon tissues contain more copies o...

Speciation in the baboon and its relation to gamma-chain heterogeneity and to the response to induction of HbF by 5-azacytidine.

In the baboon (Papio species), the two nonallelic gamma-genes produce gamma-chains that differ at a minimum at residue 75, where isoleucine (I gamma-chain) or valine (V gamma) may be present. This situation obtains in baboons that are sometimes designated as Papio anubis, Papio hamadryas, and Papio papio. However, in Papio cynocephalus, although the I gamma-chains are identical with those in th...
